Miley Cyrus has made a grand comeback this year by releasing a single called "Malibu". Inspired by her rekindled relationship with her actor fiance, Liam Hemsworth, the breezy pop song marks Miley's first Billboard Hot 100 appearance since 2014. It debuted at No. 64 on the chart with four million streams and 29,000 downloads only a day after its release on May 11. It also landed at No. 37 on the Pop Songs airplay chart.
Prior to the release, Miley claimed that the new single would be "unlike anything she has recorded before," and it wasn't a lie. The "Hannah Montana" actress seems to take a different route for "Malibu", both its music and visuals. Instead of cribbing rap and psychedelic rock music like her last two albums, she has now returned with a brand new sound and musical perspective. She also shows a big difference in the music video for "Malibu", in which she ditches her wacky image and is back to her sweet and tamer persona.
Miley delivered debut live performance of "Malibu" at Wango Tango Festival on May 13. On her colorful set, she told the crowd right after the performance, "I want to thank all of you that made 'Malibu' number one on the charts this week, and the music video."
She continued, "I just want to thank you guys from the bottom of my heart because I really do feel like this is a dream come true, being able to sing this song 'Malibu' for all of you all, right here, right now, and I so look forward to continuing to release music that hopefully makes you all smile and dance and be happy and be full of peace and love."
"Malibu" serves as the lead single off Miley's yet-to-be-titled sixth studio album which is expected to arrive later this year. The upcoming effort would be the follow-up to 2015’s "Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz" and 2013's "Bangerz" which features smash hit song "Wrecking Ball".
Miley recently brought "Malibu" to the 2017 Billboard Music Awards. She delivered a slightly different version of the breezy pop song by putting heavier twang and country vibes in the music.
